It has been more than four years since Meghan Markle stepped down as a member of the British Palace. However, she still looks like she’s feeling royal, which was evident during a recent high-profile tour with Prince Harry, according to an insider.
The Sussexes recently embarked on a three-day visit to Nigeria. However, the trip was organized with such rigor that it had all the trappings of a royal tour – despite the fact that they are no longer members of the palace. The 42-year-old is estimated to have spent around £120,000 on new clothes and jewelery for the short trip. And that prompted comments from royal watchers.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘s « royal-style » tours could require interference, royal experts have warned.
Meghan Markle kicked off her 72-hour visit to Nigeria in a £450 peach Heidi Merrick maxi dress, vintage gold earrings and a matching £1,453 gold necklace and a £50,000 Lorraine Schwartz ring. She completed her look with a diamond bracelet worth £4,391 and a gold Tank Française watch worth £20,824.
Expert Jennie Bond questioned her need to wear such an expensive outfit during the visit. Specifically, he told Times Radio: “Maybe Meghan Markle felt that this was what was expected of her because she still feels like a royal even though she doesn’t want to be part of the royals. I personally find that a little strange, but she looked great. »
She later noted: “I personally have a bit of a problem with Meghan or anyone, including members of the royal family, wearing such expensive clothes and jewelery worth thousands and thousands of pounds when you go somewhere like Nigeria. I don’t understand how you do that, it seems a bit out of tune when most Nigerians are thinking about where their next meal is going to come from. But it’s not just Meghan Markle who does this, the royals do too. »
Harry and Meghan are keen to embark on more tours in the future, with reports suggesting they have been invited to other countries. But this will only serve to further drive the distance between the couple and the British royals .
A former royal family official told the Daily Beast: “Overseas visits may sound like hawalas, but they are actually a matter of foreign policy. It is about promoting the UK and building diplomatic and trade alliances on behalf of the government. Harry and Meghan have different priorities because they are no longer working royals. But of course the vast majority of the world ignores such distinctions and considers them to be just as much members of the royal family as William and Charles, so if these overseas tours become commonplace, it could muddy the waters. »
