Anti-aging: here is the mistake not to make when using retinol skincare

They are among the most effective anti-wrinkle treatments on the market, but retinol skincare serums and creams should not be used haphazardly.

Here’s the mistake everyone makes according to an expert. It can seriously damage the skin!

Why do dermatologist recommend Retinol skincare products

Recommended by dermatologists, retinol is a reference anti-aging active ingredient in the world of cosmetics and more and more of us are adopting it to delay the appearance of signs of aging, have beautiful skin and smooth out facial wrinkles that are already there.

Multifunctional, it does not only act on wrinkles and fine lines, as explained by Jane Savage, European Marketing Director of the ROC brand.

It also targets “dark spots, sagging skin and uneven texture” of the skin to significantly improve it. Contrary to popular belief, retinol is perfect “for all skin types” explains the anti-aging skincare expert, but it must betake the reflex to use another essential treatment when applying retinol creams or serums on a daily basis.

With all retinol-based products, you absolutely must apply sunscreen  to your skin, warns Jane Savage, who recalls that this powerful anti-wrinkle active ingredient is photosensitizing.

A gesture too often forgotten in beauty routines, which nevertheless give pride of place to retinol treatments .

Retinol and sun: a combination that can damage your skin

Sensitive to sunlight, retinol is an active ingredient that loses effectiveness when exposed to UV rays. Once applied to the skin, it will also increase its sensitivity when subjected to UV rays, which can lead to allergic reactions such as redness, itching or pimples, but also to more lasting damage such as pigment spots or abnormal skin color.

Can you use retinol when it’s sunny outside?

Good news, the answer is yes. The expert is categorical: “retinol products can be used safely on sunny days, but sunscreen must be applied ”.

What sun protection to adopt when using retinol?

The rule is simple, just be sure to put a sunscreen “at least SPF15 over” your retinol treatment to effectively protect your skin from UV rays while benefiting from the anti-aging effects of your care with peace of mind.

Of course, the best is always to adopt sun protection with a maximum protection factor, but here is the minimum recommendation to adopt.

Finally, don’t forget that the amount of sunscreen needed to be properly protected is as important as the SPF of the sunscreen.

So be generous with the dose of cream when applying it to your face for it to be effective.
